Todd & Lyndsay Morris 9/20/08

Seaside wedding? This is your invitation!
Beautiful calming colors make this invitation a perfect match for a beach wedding. We started with a thick cream colored handmade paper detailing the strands of straws pressed into the paper. Each invitation was hand ripped giving a deckled edge feel. The invitation is printed on a piece of light blue vellum which lays atop the handmade paper. We used two hemp knots to attach the vellum to the handmade paper - a symbolic detail for this couple tying the knot.
Next is the enclosure cards, a reply card and reception card both printed on cream cardstock. To bring some detail to these cards we added torn strips of the handmade paper to each. The reply card also had a bow made of hemp, an excellent touch suggested by our bride and groom.

Before the invitation...there was a save the date. To announce their big day, we created a simple save the date magnet using small shells as details for their beach themed wedding(these shells will play a big part later:) Notice the three shells designed on the top of the magnet were then carried over to the top of the invitation.

For another example of this invitation style please see our past post on

Adam & Erica Corn 10/16/2009

Happy 1 Year Anniversary!!!

Here is a simple invitation that displays many beautiful details. We started with a square of navy blue linen cardstock then layered it with an orange shimmer paper and white cardstock. Linen paper has a wonderful subtle texture and gives any invitation that little touch of elegance. This invitation is also a great example of how to add a second wedding color without being too bold. We were able to add their second color orange by using a thin border of the orange shimmer paper and printing their names in matching orange ink. Another element of their wedding was the navy damask print which we printed across the top of the invitation and carried it onto the top of the reply card as well. The reply card was also printed on white cardstock and backed with the navy linen cardstock. In addition to their invitation package was a large square information card, slightly smaller than the invitation, made of white cardstock. Printed on this card was directions and hotel information. When you have a lot of information to share with your guests, consider one large card opposed to a few smaller cards. This will allow you plenty of room to include those important details all on one easy card for your guest to hold.

Sean & Susan McKenna 6/14/08

Happy 3 year Anniversary Sean & Susan

Bright, bold, simple and complete is what you will find in this invitation. We started with a beautiful tropical blue handmade mulberry paper. Each invitation is hand torn to display the deckled edges. The invitation itself is printed on clear vellum which is laid over the handmade paper and attached with a silver brad and matching white and blue daisy flower. To accommodate this invitation we have a matching vertical reply card printed on white cardstock with a swatch of the blue mulberry paper having a daisy cutout. The blue daisy cutout we then placed on a matching direction card, also printed on the white cardstock.

Check out our website for other examples of this invitation. www.invitationsbythisandthat.com

The Seating Plan

You invitations are out and now the fun begins! You wait anxiously everyday for the mail man to deliver your mail hoping to receive multiple little envelopes or postcards informing you of who will be attending your big day. As the replies start trickling in you start checking off your guest list. Who said yes, exactly how many guests will be there and what their meal choices will be are some of the things you'll be calculating.
Then comes the seating chart - who sits next to whom? Typically, your tables will consist of family, friend tab and then the hodgepodge of people who may know you but are strangers to each other. Some people do away with seating charts altogether...no place cards nor seating boards, guests simply seat themselves. But honestly what's the fun in that??!!

Seating Plan Tip

Having a hard time with your seating plan? Here's a little tip that might make things easier. Start a spreadsheet or document with your entire guest list. Group everyone by how you know them (for example; brides family, grooms family, cousins, close friends, co-workers, high school friends, etc...). Try to keep these lists at 8 to 12 per group. When your replies come in you can delete the declined guests from your spreadsheet and keep the accepts. When all of your replies are in you can use this list to start your seating chart. You will already have people grouped and ready to seat together at tables and will only need to make some minor adjustments and moves to accommodate the number that can seat at each table :)

Once your seating chart is finished, it's time to decide on how your guest will  find out where they will be seated at the reception location. The traditional way is the classic fold over card with the guest's name and table number printed or handwritten. Over the years the traditional card has evolved into so much more. In the near future we will do another post on the place card. What we would like to talk about is another alternative to the place card, the seating plan...

What is a seating plan?

The seating board is a poster size board that lists all of the tables along with you guest's names. The idea is to WOW your guests with a decorative board that makes them feel part of the "A-list". There's a lot of creative things that can be done with a board. Allow the theme of your wedding to follow through on a matching seating plan. Use the same color scheme, flowers and overall style to suit your wedding. If you have a beach wedding we can add seashells or sand to the actual board. If your wedding is at a winery we can add corks or wine labels.

What is included on the board?

Basically, we list the bride and groom names on the top, followed by the head table, immediate family, extended family, friends and so forth. Each section has the table number/name and the guest's names listed below in alphabetical order, or however you decide.

Here are two seating plans we've done with some fun details:

1940's Old Hollywood wedding theme.

Ivory and red shimmer paper with ivory ribbon.
*** notice the fun wording for the head table  "featuring" for the bride & groom and "co-stars" for the wedding party***

The Save the Date

Who, what, when, how? These are some questions you may ask when starting your wedding planning. After you decide on your wedding date it's time to make things official with a save the date.
What is a save the date you ask?
It's a small informal announcement sent to your guests to let them know of your wedding date and place. You can get as detailed as you would like, but on the norm you mainly list your names, the date and city your wedding will take place and inform them a formal invitation will follow. Some include hotel information at this time. Save the dates are especially great if you will be having a lot of out of town guests. You can list your wedding website where they can get more information about the big day.
When do I mail out save the dates?
Typically, a save the date is mailed between a year and six months prior to your wedding. If you are having a destination wedding we recommend a year from your date since guests will need to make major travel arrangements, take time off from work and save up some extra cash, especially if it's out of the country. When mailing save the dates less than six months prior to your wedding you will be cutting it close to your mailing date for your wedding invitations.
How do I design a save the date?
There are many different save the date styles. We can design a postcard, a small invitation card, which can match your "to be" wedding invitations, calendar stickers or a save the date magnet. The save the date magnets have been a HUGE hit! Your guests will love that they can stick it to their refrigerator or filing cabinets, and they have a daily reminder of your wedding to come - there's plenty of room to be creative. Anything can be added to you save the date card or magnet...a calender, your engagement photo, a picture of the destination where you'll be married, or we can start with any theme you may have in mind.
Who gets a save the date?
You don't have to send a save a date to everyone you are inviting, but you do have to send an invitation to everyone you've mailed a save the date. You want to make sure that your guests have plenty of time to prepare and plan for your wedding arrangements. Any guests who have to make travel plans should get a save the date, even your wedding party - plain and simple, anyone who you REALLY want to attend your wedding:)

Matt & Kendra Pilson 4/26/2008

Happy Anniversary Kendra & Matt!

If you've been looking for a custom designed beach wedding invitation - look no more! This beautiful invitation exudes everything beach in all the right ways. The invitation is printed on a piece of smooth ivory cardstock and has a strip of sand (yes, real sand right from the beach:) cascading down the side. The invite is bordered with a stunning piece of  aqua shimmer cardstock that simply shines. The entire invitation is attached in a custom designed pocket made of a rich and thick brown handmade paper. The invitation is attached with two hemp knots, signifying their uniting. The reply card was printed on ivory, bordered with the aqua shimmer cardstock and attached with a hemp knot. With a mix of local and traveling guests, the couple had both direction and accommodation cards detailing all the necessary information. The accommodation card that was printed on ivory cardstock and bordered with the aqua shimmer paper, was much needed as the couple invited many of the guests to stay for the weekend at the hotel and beach where the wedding was taking place. ALL of these cards are tucked away easily and neatly in the bottom portion of this pocketfold, which is enclosed with a hemp ribbon. When folded, this pocket fold invitation is wrapped and tied with a hemp ribbon and an outer tag displaying the couple's names. The completed invitation was then placed in an aqua shimmer inner envelope with an ivory outer envelope. We made matching return address labels printed on ivory with fonts matching the invitation.

For the big day, we designed matchbook style programs alternating both the ivory and aqua colors used in their invitations, with a small touch of the brown handmade paper. But don't stop there, to keep everything flowing we design coordinating menus and use starfish that double as a favor and escort card with printed tags displaying the guest and table number.

This gorgeous invitation couldn't have been more perfect for a barefoot beach wedding at the beautiful Tradewinds Resort on St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. Keep in mind all of these paper colors can be altered to perfectly match your wedding colors. Email us @ invitationsbythisandthat@live.com for pricing and more invitation options.

Jason & Kelly Berger 4/23/08

Happy Anniversary to our friends in Colorado!
Jason & Kelly Berger

Here's what we did for their invitation!

Due to the fact that they had a lot of out of town guests, they decided to go with a square pocket fold invitation for their rustic wedding. We created a custom made, pocket fold out of chocolate brown matted card stock. The pocket was attached with two bronze brads. Their invitation was printed on cream card stock and bordered with kraft. Down the side of the invite is a strip of beautiful blue, thick handmade paper. There are lots of fibers and different shades of blue swirled throughout. The same strip is down the side of the reply card as well. Their enclosure cards included a hotel accommodation card and a direction card, which was a map of the area. When the invitation was all closed, we tied it with a natural raffia ribbon and placed it in a kraft brown envelope.

The overall feel of this invitation was perfect for their outdoor wedding which was held on the stunning grounds of the Lionsgate Center in Lafayette, Colorado.

This handmade paper comes in various colors which we can be coordinated with your wedding.  We offer many styles of pocket folds in square and rectanglular shapes including our own custom made pockets to suit your wedding.

Just in time for Earth Day... an earth friendly invitation!

When Sue came to us with the idea of a 100 % recycled earth friendly invitation we were so excited! For those who know us we are freaks about recycling so we couldn't wait to dive into this invitation.
Here's what we did...
Invitation and Reply Post Card (save on shipping cost with a post card) are printed on a 100% recycled paper with 30% post consumer fibers. There are noticeable fibers and specks in both papers. Even though they are recycled papers they have a smooth finish. There's a raffia tie wrapped around the invitation with two small tags showcased on the back of the invitation. One tag has a note to their guests explaining the tag behind it which is handmade plantable paper. The plantable paper is white with larkspur flowers all throughout. When planted with a little bit of water and lots of love, wildflowers will start to bloom. Also check out all the recycling symbols we put in there. We didn't stop there with the earth friendly theme - don't forget the mailing envelope that is a kraft brown envelope which is 100 % recycled and 100%  post consumer waste.

Thanks Sue & Danny for letting us help create your special day to come!

Keep an eye out for other earth friendly invitations. We definitely have lots of ideas brewing after doing this wedding :)
